Crow

  • Fly away, crow; fly away,
  • this house isn’t meant for you.
  • Fly away, crow; fly away,
  • this bread isn’t yours too.
  • Fly away, crow; fly away,
  • you’ll bring the dragons’ sear.
  • Fly away, crow; fly away,
  • we do not want you here.

—Folk hymn

The crow (both singular and plural to the people of the Drekken Mire) is a bird of symbol, superstition, and omen.

The birds seldom seem to venture their flights near civilized land, and their presence is always meaningful and often ominous.

It is said that crow meat was the most succulent and tasty kind for winged dragons, and the rhymes and lullabies of children are filled with the horrors that ensue when a child takes a crow as a pet and a horde of dragonkin arrive to retrieve it, or when a murder of crow decide to roost in a nearby tree, and a dragon arrives to make his meal.

Because of this legendary status, crow are seen as harbingers of doom. The only time crow are seen as an auspicious augury is when their arrival is loud and short-lived, and their departure is soft and lasting.
