The Terebyth family is one the three founding families of Lyridock.
The family’s identity is deeply tied to the oft-told and endlessly embellished legend of Terebyth the Mariner. The legend tells the story of Terebyth and his ship, the Lyre. In the story (depending on who does the telling), Terebyth was a fisherman who got blown off course in a storm and ended up beached far across the Sea of Squalls. There he found himself accosted by a trio of beautiful and powerful merfolk. The merfolk challenged him to a contest of wills and wits. (Again, this contest takes a multitude of forms in various tales.) Terebyth outwits the merfolk and convinces them to make the winds and the waves bend to his will, and to put a spell on his descendants which will “curse” them to ride the waves forever in success and prosperity.
Terebyths explain their mercantile success with these mariners legends.
